Is the problem multiple cubes?

Following my problems yesterday with multiple crashes, I started fresh
in a new folder.
I created a database source that connects to AS. I created a report
through the wizard, and when it finished I saved everything, and it
worked correctly from the preview. Everything looked fine.
But when I clicked on the data tab, everything in the designer was
wiped clean. This has happened a number of times.
Could this be because there are two cubes in the database? I'm using
the second one alphabetically, and when I go to the data tab the first
one is displayed as a default.

Is SQL Server required?

If the source tables for Analysis Services 2000 and 2005 are all coming from Oracle, is there any reason why we need to have SQL Server installed as well?
