Is there a sp_trace method to read input from a template file?

Is there a way to pass to template file to an sp_trace method to specify the
trace parameters to the profiler?
Thanks,

You can specify the following on the Profiler command-line:
/S Server
/D Database
/B Trace table to load
/E Trusted Connection
/U Login Name
/P Password
/F Trace File to load
/T Template file to load or use when starting a new trace
You can also script your own traces using the SQL Trace API (see
sp_trace* procs in BOL).

parameters from a template. I did not find such a functionality with any of
sp_trace methods.
Is there any other way of doing it?
Thanks,
Reshma.

When you define a server-side trace, you do not use templates.
Everything is added to the trace programmatically using the sp_trace*()
procedures:
sp_trace_create
sp_trace_setevent
sp_trace_setfilter
sp_trace_setstatus
You can query running trace information with the fn_trace*() system
functions:
fn_trace_geteventinfo
fn_trace_getfilterinfo
fn_trace_getinfo
You can query data from a trace table (created with a server-side trace)
using:
fn_trace_gettable
The easiest way to see the generated server-side trace T-SQL, is to
define the trace and filters in Profiler, start the trace, and then
select the File --> Script Trace menu option. Profiler creates the
script to create and start the trace. Stopping the trace is your
responsibility. Keep in mind that Profiler binds all columns to all
selected events. It's not necessary to do this programmatically. You can
select the columns you're interested in for each event and only bind
those.
You might also want to take a look at our Coefficient product, which
provides an easy method to perform SQL performance analysis. If you have
any questions about Coefficient, our support staff is available to
assist you.

Is there a possible MS media player file demo of Reporting Service

I heard, from a friend, that there is a possible Microsoft media player file
that shows a demo of Reporting Services. The demo is supposed to show how to
access multiple textboxes in the Custom code, place a chart into a table,
etc...
Does any one know of the demo?
Thanks in AdvanceHave you looked on the Reporting Services web site for it yet? There's a
.wmv file at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/reporting/productinfo/RS_AuthoringDemo.asp that
says it demos how to author, manage, and deliver reports but I haven't
watched it myself to see if it matches your description.

Is there a easy way to backup by DTSs?

Hi,

In order to backup by DTS packages, currently I individually open each DTS package in Design mode and then save them as Structured Storage File. Since I have a # of DTS packages and due to the current nature of the work these are changed frequently therefore this backing activity takes time.

Is there a simpler solution via which I canbackup all my DTS packages?

Many TIA.Hi,

have a look here:

Thanks. Is this a freeware or a shareware?|||Think it's freeware. But it's mentioned in the license (which is quite short ;-) )|||Aye its freeware "You can use and distribute the software internally within your organisation".
This product works so well, we have an scheduled job which backups 5 server's DTS packages to a central location. :-)

Is thee a log file that can tell when records were deleted

I do a monthly update that uses about 20+ DTS packages to import and
update SQL 2000 tables. I have a few tables that somehow get empty.
The update package does truncate the destination table then adds records
from the "staging" table into the destination table. Which works fine.
I tested it several times and when the individual package runs I have
data in the destination table. But when all packages are run, the data
gets removed. So I am thinking that buried in one of my packages it's
deleting the records. I have yet to find it. So is there a way to trap
when records get deleted from this table? An event or is their a log?

Is the size of data.mdf too large? it is about 8G

Hi All
I have a question about size of data file.
My database have two data file :
data.mdf is 8G
log.ldf is 400M.
Is the size of data.mdf too large ?
Recently our database is often corrupted. Such as page
errors. I think the cause maybe is size of data.mdf is too
large. So it can cause the file corrupted?
Do I think right?
Last evening the database is corrupted and can not
be repaired by running DBCC command. So the only thing I
can do is restore the database from latest backup.
Is the size of data.mdf too large?
Any help is appreciate.
Thanks
Ping8GB is not large at all for sql server. If your getting corruption it is
most likely due to the hardware. Do you have a proper RAID with a battery
backed controller for the data file and is the server on a UPS?

Is SQL Express 2005 by default a single connection db?

Is SQL Express 2005 by default a single connection db?
Background:
I wrote a simple .bat file which executes the following sqlcmd call:
"sqlcmd -S BLUEBOX\SQLEXPRESS -d C:\App_Data\ASPNETDB.MDF -U
MyUserCount -P MyUserPassword -Q "Exec SendMessage" -o C:\Vocalico
\SendMailQuePump\Undelievered.txt"
the above command works fine, as long as no other application is
accessing the db.
Also, using VS2005 I wrote a simple web based calendar scheduling
application which I am testing by launching it via Visual Studio 2005
(using the built in ASP.Net Development Server), the web application
seems to work correctly as well.
The Problem Found:
When I run the VS2005 web application the sqlcmd fails to login (note
that the web application and the sqlcmd access the same db (C:\App_Data
\ASPNETDB.MDF)). The following is the error I get form SQL 2005
Express when running the sqlcmd while the web application is running:
Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Server BLUEBOX\SQLEXPRESS, Line 1
Unable to open the physical file "C:\App_Data\aspnetdb.mdf". Operating
system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process.)".
Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Server BLUEBOX\SQLEXPRESS, Line 1
Unable to open the physical file "C:\App_Data\aspnetdb_log.ldf".
Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file
because it is being used by another process.)".
File activation failure. The physical file name "C:\App_Data
\aspnetdb_log.ldf" may be incorrect.
Msg 4060, Level 11, State 1, Server BLUEBOX\SQLEXPRESS, Line 1
Cannot open database "C:\App_Data\ASPNETDB.MDF" requested by the
login. The login failed.
Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Server BLUEBOX\SQLEXPRESS, Line 1
Login failed for user 'MyUserCount'.
Questions:
Shouldn't SQL 2005 Express allow more than one user to connect and
authenticate to the db by default? Are there any settings I need to
modify in Visual Studio 2005 or SQL Express 2005 in order to allow my
web app and the sqlcmd command to co-exist and execute without
interfering with each other?
My Setup:
VS 2005
XP Professional SP2
SQL 2005 Express
web.config connection string looks like this:
<add name="ASPNETDBConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.
\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated
Security=SSPI;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/
>
I have been going around in circles on this issue, any help would be
greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
-ralphI think there might be some confusion to what the database concept is. For the "real" SQL server, we
create the database and to use it, se specify the database name in the USE command, or the database
name in the connection string or for the -d option for sqlcmd. But you use the physical name of the
mdf file in your sqlcmd call.
My guess is that sqlcmd does either some form of special attach (read about sp_attach_db for the
concept of attach) and it becomes in some form of single user mode. Or that sqlcmd even handles the
instance as a user-instance (a concept only available for Express, which I haven't played with but
which you should be able to find some info if you Google).
So, what I would do is to attach the database (sp_attach_db) and then specify the database name (not
file name) in sqlcmd and your connection string.

Is Report Builder compatible with Firefox and other browsers?

The Report Builder works fine for me in IE of course, but I get this
error in Firefox:
"Could not find file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Greg\Desktop
\ReportBuilder.exe.manifest'."
Mind you, Firefox asks me to save the file instead of opening it
directly as IE does.
Thanks in advance,
GregI know in reporting services 2000 you have to use IE. There is no way around
it. Not sure about 2005...

Is possible to delete LOG file in SQL

can i delete the LOG file in the sql bcoz of large file size.

will it be able to use it without the LOG file and only with DAT file.

help me

SQL Server can't function without a log file. Regular log backups keeps your log small.

If you are not interested in the records in the log you can issue a BACKUP LOG dbname WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY. Maybe issue a DBCC SHRINKFILE (Filename, Size) WITH TRUNCATEONLY after that.

Using the SIMPLE recovery model also limits the size of the transaction log because it automatically truncates the log under certain circumstances. But a normal production database usually requires the FULL recovery model and regular backups.

Is possible restore only a MDF file from backup file?

Hi,
have a problem, I need restore only MDF file from my backup file named
data.BAK, beacause the LDF file is too big, is possible?
After restore data file, I need create a new empty log file for my db.
thx!I'm afraid not. When you do a RESTORE, SQL Server need to be able to create
the same amount of file, with the
same logical name and the same file size as you had when the backup was take

Is osql standalone?

Hello all,
I want to know if I can start the osql utility from a computer without SQL
Server, MSDE, etc. Is this file standalone?
Thanks,
SorinYou must have installed sql connectivity, and Osql, but the server stuff is
not required.

Is My Backup Plan Safe?

I need to setup an online backup mechanism which allows restoration of data
up to point of failure in the event of DB file corruption or hard disk drive
failure. The current DB size is ~ 100M with a growth rate of ~15M/month for
the last 6 months. I'm thinking of :
1. Create a scheduled daily full backup from c drive to d drive
2. Create a scheduled hourly transaction log backup from c drive to d drive
3. Create a scheduled weekly full backup of backup folder in d drive to tape
drive with Windows backup utility.
4. Create scheduled daily differential backup of backup folder in d drive to
tape drive with Windows backup utility.
5. Two tapes will be rotated every alternate week for backup to tapes. Tape
not in used will be taken off-site.
Is the above plan good enough for the recovery scenario I want to address?Ong
Yep it looks pretty good. But remember that everything you did so far has
no value if you cannot restore the database. Verify that backups are not
corrupted and you can easily restore the database

database drive and your backup drive.
If C and D are separate physical drives are they on the same disk
controller? If the controller fails then you won't be able to access your
database and backups until you replace the controller or put the drive in
another box..
Imagine your server and tape drive are stolen. It sounds like you would have
to go to tape and possibly lose a week of transactions.
I would backup across the network or directly to the tape drive or get a
separate external hard drive. If your only moving data offsite once a week
get a fireproof safe.
I don't think your backup plan is safe and I don't believe you will be able
to restore to the point of failure if say your building burns down.

Thanks for your important input.
I didn't check this thread for a few days & only saw your reply today.
I hope you can clarify my questions below:

FYI, D is an external usb drive

Will backup across the network be slow and cause network jam?

Do you mean to put the tape in a fireproof safe in the office or offsite?

Sounds like for solution with tape, the only safe way is to use 7 (or 5
excluding weekends) backup tapes to do full db backup daily and transaction
logs backup hourly and keep all the unused tapes offsite.
